After accusing Dalton of cheating during the auction, Wilhelm Smart ordered his guards to attack. The fight spread across the entire ballroom and left many tables and chairs overturned, but eventually Wilhelm’s guards were defeated, and he was forcibly escorted out of the building. Just as the gala was getting started again, Lily suddenly fainted and Dorothy seemed to know why.
Meanwhile, outside the building, Ethan was standing with a large crowd gathered behind a velvet rope, which only invited guests of the gala could cross. He tried to peer inside, wondering how it was going. There must be a way to get in there and disrupt things, he muttered under his breath.
You look like a man who is up to no good, Officer Kelly Emmett whispered to Ethan as she observed the growing rage in his heart and the frown on his face. Maybe that’s something I could help you with. Ethan was hesitant to trust her, she was a cop after all.
Why would you want to ruin this gala? You sound like a cop who just wants to coerce me into doing something stupid so you can arrest me afterwards. Is that it? Officer Emmett shook her head. No, I’m not going to arrest you.
I want to ruin the gala because I’m a member of the union. Ever heard of us? We’re a secret alliance fighting to take over the city for the benefit of the people. Kevin has thwarted us in the past and he’s made himself a permanent enemy of mine.
Officer Emmett had been on the police beat for many years and she knew how to size up someone quickly. In Ethan, she saw a means to her own end. Ethan relaxed a bit, finding common ground with Officer Emmett.
Really? That sounds familiar. Kevin is my greatest enemy as well. He took over our family empire and left me with nothing.
What did you have in mind for how we could work together? Officer Emmett’s eyebrows sharpened as she focused her thoughts. I just need a reason to arrest him. It could be anything.
Bribery, tax evasion, jaywalking. You don’t have any dirt on him, do you? Ethan shook his head in frustration. No.
As much as I hate to admit, Kevin’s record is squeaky clean. I don’t think he’s even ever received a parking ticket. Well, said Officer Emmett, perhaps we could change that.
Think you could force him into committing a crime? Ethan made a confused face. What kind of crime? I doubt I could convince him to do anything illegal. He doesn’t listen to me about anything.
Officer Emmett thought for a moment. Maybe you could get him to assault you. If you press charges, we can throw the book at him and put him away for years.
Ethan hesitated. I don’t know. I’ve seen him in a fight and well, Kevin can punch pretty hard.
And I’m only a level one. And while I hate to admit Kevin’s levels are far higher than that, I heard that he broke through to level seven when he was in Washington, D.C. There’s no way I could face him down in a battle. Officer Emmett playfully punched him on the shoulder.
Oh, come on. All you’d have to do is take one punch. I’d step in and arrest him right away.
You can do it. Ethan let out a deep breath inside. Fine, but we still need to find a way to get in there.
Just then, sirens filled the air as a pair of ambulance trucks pulled up in front of the gala. At the same time, Kevin rushed out of the building with Lily in his arms. By then she had already awakened from fainting.
Kevin, really, I’m fine. You can put me down now. A team of Radiance members made a way through the crowd for Kevin and Lily.
We have to be sure, Lily. I’m taking you to the hospital. As Kevin and Lily approached the ambulance, Officer Emmett looked at Ethan and said, looks like now is our only chance.
Quick, get him to throw a punch at you. Don’t attack him first, though, or we’ll lose the case. Ethan nodded.
All right, I’ll do my best. As Kevin lifted Lily onto a stretcher, she was still insisting it wasn’t necessary. Oh, Kevin, can we please just go home? I’m telling you, I’m fine.
I just got a little dizzy is all. Do it for me, Lily, Kevin replied. I won’t sleep right unless we know for sure that nothing is wrong with you.
Oh, all right, fine. You’ll see, though. I’m absolutely fine.
A team of medics lifted Lily into the ambulance, and just before Kevin could hop in behind them, Ethan jumped out and blocked his way. Hello, cousin. I’m sorry to see that the gala is ending a little earlier than expected.
Tell me, is it something she ate? Kevin frowned and looked back at Ethan right in the eyes. He knew it wasn’t right to hate one of his own family members, but Ethan was now taking pleasure in Lily’s collapse. What are you doing here, Ethan? It’s none of your business.
Now get out of my way. Kevin tried to take a step forward, but Ethan wouldn’t move. I’m just saying, it’d be a real shame if someone had poisoned the food.
You know, the way your herbalism ingredients were tainted a few days before. Someone should really get out there and catch whoever’s responsible for this, don’t you think? Kevin looked up at Ethan as if a light bulb had gone off in his head. Wait a minute.
Are you saying what I think you’re saying? Did you have something to do with this? Ethan grinned, practically begging Kevin to punch him. Who’s to say? Even if I did, it’s not like you’d be able to prove it. I don’t have time for this, Kevin groaned.
I’ll handle you later. When Ethan refused to step aside, Kevin pushed him out of the way, and the moment his hand touched him, Ethan dropped to the ground and started wailing about how much it hurt. Oh, good God, Kevin.
Look what you’ve done to me. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to walk again. Kevin was stunned.
He hadn’t even activated his power base. It was just a gentle push. Get up, Ethan.
I didn’t even push you that hard. Just then, Officer Emmett dashed forward, holding her badge for all to see. Step back, everyone.
This is a police matter. She looked at Kevin and shook her head like a disappointed parent. You just couldn’t help yourself, could you, Kevin? Now this poor, innocent pedestrian will probably need a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
What do you have to say for yourself? Kevin’s jaw dropped. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He’s obviously faking it, Emmett.
Take him to the doctor if you want. I guarantee he’s unharmed. Oh, we’ll get to that soon enough, don’t you worry, Kevin.
But first, I’m putting you under arrest for aggravated assault. Put your hands behind your back. She pulled out a pair of handcuffs and gestured for him to come toward her.
Kevin was flabbergasted, but then he realized what was really going on. Oh, I see what you’re up to. Ethan wanted me to push him out of the way so you could step in and charge me with aggravated assault.
Well, we have a full crowd of witnesses here, Officer Emmett. Let’s see how that will hold up in court. Without wasting any more thought on the matter, Kevin hopped in the ambulance and slammed the door shut.
As the ambulance drove away, Ethan stopped squirming and hopped back up to his feet. Damn, we almost had him, don’t you think? Officer Emmett frowned as she saw the ambulance turn around the corner. It’s not too late.
You just have to let me beat you up a bit and then we can pretend that he did it. Ethan crossed his arms and took a step back. Sorry, but that’s a definite no from me.
A few minutes later, the ambulance arrived at the hospital and Lily was rushed in to see a doctor. As they waited for her, Lily lay in a hospital bed, still insisting that she was fine. You know, if we had just gone home, we’d probably be asleep by now.
Just then, Dr. Serafina Willow walked in and closed the door behind her. Hello, Mrs. Williams. I’m told you are experiencing some nausea and fatigue.
Why don’t you start from the beginning? Kevin was relieved to know that Dr. Willow would be able to see Lily. She had helped him and his family in the past and was invited to Lily’s gala, but knowing Dr. Willow’s dedication to her job, it was a surprise to Kevin that she had been able to leave her patients at the hospital to attend the gala. She had helped him and his family in the past and was invited to Lily’s gala, but knowing Dr. Willow’s dedication to her job, it was a surprise to Kevin that she had been able to leave her patients at the hospital to attend the gala.
She had to leave early, he knew, to return to duty, and he was glad to see that now she would oversee Lily’s care in the emergency room. Lily laughed, playing down Dr. Willow’s seriousness. Oh, it’s really nothing, doctor.
I’m only here because my husband insists on it. All that happened was I got a little dizzy during dinner and blacked out for just a second or two. It sometimes happens when I get stressed, but it’s nothing to worry about.
I’m feeling just fine now. Serafina scanned Lily up and down, looking for any obvious symptoms. Well, you seem to be functioning just fine, but why don’t we run just a few tests, just to be sure? You can never be too cautious.
Lily sighed, but Kevin felt validated. Thank you, doctor. That’s what I’ve been saying.
After giving the attending nurses some samples, Lily returned to Kevin and laid in the bed. As she put her head against the pillow, Kevin noticed a pout on her face and gently took her hand. What’s the matter, honey? Are you feeling sick again? Lily shook her head.
No, that’s not it. I just hope the gala went all right. You don’t think the fight ruined it, do you? Kevin chuckled.
Hey, are you kidding me? I think, if anything, people enjoyed it. Did you see how they were cheering when the Radiance dragged Wilhelm out of the building? It’s a story they’ll tell for the rest of their lives. Lily smiled, feeling better about it.
Thanks, Kevin. You always know just what to say to cheer me up. Just then, Serafina came back into the room with a serious face.
Mr. and Mrs. Williams, I have some news for you that might come as a bit of a shock. Kevin’s heart dropped into his stomach. Oh, God, what is it? What’s wrong? Serafina cleared her throat.
Well, nothing is wrong, but your test results confirm that you’re pregnant, Mrs. Williams. Lily looked at Kevin with pure joy on her face. Kevin, we’re going to have a baby.
