Shadow Billionaire Episode 2 – Saved | Pocket FMRyan Quinn (gripping Todd Baker’s hand tightly): You think you can walk all over us? Think again.

Todd Baker (wincing, struggling to pull his hand away): Let go, Quinn!

Mary Quinn (standing up, voice trembling): Enough of this! Both of you!

(Mary runs out of the ballroom, tears streaming down her face.)

Ryan (releasing Baker but still glaring at him): This isn’t over.

Martha Lowell (Ryan’s mother-in-law, stepping forward angrily): What do you think you’re doing, you idiot? Are you trying to destroy this family?

(Ryan turns away and hurries after Mary, finding her outside, staring at her phone.)

Ryan (gently approaching): Honey, are you okay?

Mary (spinning around, eyes filled with frustration): Why did you have to get involved? Can’t you see this is hard enough without you making promises you can’t keep?

Ryan (softly): I wasn’t trying to make things harder.

Mary (sarcastic laugh): And now that you embarrassed Todd in front of everyone, there’s no way he’ll lend us the ten million dollars.

Ryan (pleading): Mary, at least tell me what’s going on. If I understood the problem, maybe I could help.

Mary (crossing her arms): Don’t worry about it.

Ryan: What? You don’t believe I can help you?

Mary (exhales deeply): I used to, Ryan. I used to think you were capable of anything. But for the past two years… you’ve just—

Ryan (narrowing his eyes): Just what?

Mary (frustrated): You have no ambition, Ryan. You cook and clean for my family, and they treat you like garbage. And you just take it. You don’t fight back, you don’t stand up for yourself, and you don’t try to do anything better with your life.

Ryan (calmly): I like taking care of your family, and I like taking care of you.

Mary (voice cracking): I don’t feel taken care of. The company my father built is ten million dollars in debt. If I don’t find the money in three days, we’ll go bankrupt.

(A car pulls up.)

Mary (opening the door, voice softening): I need to be alone right now.

(Ryan watches as she gets into the car and drives away.)

(A shrill voice cuts through the air.)

Martha (marching up to Ryan): Where is my daughter? What have you done now, you lazy bum?

Ryan (clenching his fists): What have I done? You were going to let Todd Baker sleep with your daughter just so he’d loan you some money. What kind of mother does that?

Martha (gasping, hand to her chest): How dare you? I would never do such a thing!

Carrie Lowell (Mary’s sister, stepping outside, looking annoyed): Mother, what’s going on? Why did you leave me in there all alone?

Martha (pointing at Ryan): Mr. Good-for-Nothing over here ruined everything with Todd. Our branch of the company is as good as lost.

Carrie (eyeing Ryan up and down in disgust): Ew. Well, what did you expect, Mother? Look at him. He’s dressed like a gardener. You should have made him stay in the car all night.

Martha (rolling her eyes): I wanted to, but your sister wouldn’t allow it. Now everything is ruined.

Ryan (sighing): Should I get the car?

Martha (huffing): Yes. It’s the one thing you’re good at.

(That night, Ryan locks himself in the guest room and makes a phone call.)

Ryan: Tom, are my accounts unfrozen yet?

Tom Harlan (his father’s right-hand man, on the other end): They are. I can have a bank card delivered whenever you like. Until then, just tell me what you need.

Ryan: I need $20 million invested into CML Financial by tomorrow morning. Anonymously.

Tom: Consider it done.

Ryan: Thanks, Tom. We’ll talk soon.

(The next morning, Ryan is in the kitchen making breakfast when Charles Lowell rushes down the stairs, ecstatic.)

Charles (holding up his phone): You did it! You guys did it! Our company is saved!

Martha (snatching the phone, jaw dropping): I don’t believe it…

Ryan (acting innocent): What happened?

Martha (still staring at the screen): CML Financial’s balance just went from a $10 million debt to a $10 million profit!

Charles (scratching his head): The money came from an anonymous source. If this was Todd Baker’s investment, why doesn’t it say so?

Martha (waving it off): Probably some tax thing. Who cares? The point is, Todd came through.

Ryan (smirking slightly): That’s great news. Congratulations.

Martha (scowling at him): No thanks to you.

(Later that morning, Mary approaches Ryan.)

Mary (softly): Ryan, can you drive me into the city? I’d like to work out of the Boston office today.

Ryan: Of course.

(During the drive, Mary is quiet, lost in thought.)

Mary: Take Boylston.

Ryan: Sure thing.

(Mary suddenly asks him to stop outside an Apple store.)

Ryan (confused): What’s this? Do you need a new phone?

Mary (smirking): No, you do. You’re still using a flip phone. I’m getting you an upgrade.

Ryan (chuckling): So? It works fine.

Mary: Humor me.

(She pulls him inside the store.)

(While they wait, Ryan notices a man in a long coat and derby hat outside, pretending not to look in.)

Ryan (casually): You know, this might take a while. Why don’t you take the car and head to the office? I’ll grab the keys from you later.

Mary (checking her phone): Actually, that’s a good idea. You sure you’ll be okay?

Ryan (smiling): I’m sure.

(She hands him the keys, kisses him lightly, and leaves.)

(A store employee hands Ryan his new phone.)

Employee: Here you are, sir. You’re good to go.

(Ryan steps outside. The man in the derby hat is waiting.)

Ryan (grinning): Hello, Tom. It’s been a long time. Are you here to bring me home?

Ryan Quinn stared straight into Todd Baker’s eyes as he continued to crush his hand. Baker tried to squeeze back, but he was no match for Ryan’s strength. Enough of this! Both of you! Ryan’s wife Mary said.

Then she stood up from the table and ran for the exit, crying as she left the ballroom. Ryan released Baker from his grip, but continued to stare him down. What do you think you’re doing, you idiot? Ryan’s mother-in-law Martha scolded.

Are you trying to destroy this family? Ryan still wanted to punch Baker’s lights out, but he needed to make sure Mary was okay. He turned and followed her outside. He found her standing by the curb with her phone out.

She was typing something into the screen. Honey, he said, approaching her slowly. Are you okay? Why did you have to get involved? She snapped, whirling around to face him.

Can’t you see this is hard enough without you making promises you can’t keep? I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to make things harder. And now that you’ve embarrassed Todd in front of all those people, there’s no way he’ll agree to loan us the ten million dollars.

Mary, can you at least tell me what’s going on? If I understood the problem, maybe I could find a way to help. Mary snorted at him. Don’t worry about it.

What? You don’t believe I can help you? I used to, Ryan. I used to think you were capable of anything. But these past two years, you’ve just… I’ve just what? You have no ambition, Ryan.

You cook and clean for my family, and they treat you like garbage. And you just take it. You don’t fight back, you don’t stand up for yourself, and you don’t ever try to do anything better with your life.

I like taking care of your family, Ryan said, and I like taking care of you. I don’t feel taken care of, she said. The company my father built is ten million dollars in debt, and if I can’t find the money in three days, we’re going to go bankrupt.

An Uber pulled to a stop at the curb. I’m sorry, Ryan, Mary said, opening the car door. I need to be alone right now.

Ryan watched as Mary closed the door and the Uber drove away. He continued to stare off into the distance until he was snapped out of his daze by the sound of his mother-in-law’s shrill voice behind him. Where is my daughter? What have you done now, you lazy bum? What have I done? You were going to let Todd Baker sleep with your daughter just so he’d loan you some money.

What kind of a mother are you? Martha put her hand to her chest. Why, I would never do such a thing. I’m offended that you would even accuse me of something so vile.

Whatever, Ryan said, turning away from her. Carrie Lowell, Mary’s sister, came out of the hotel and walked over to them. Mother, what is going on? Why did you guys leave me in there all alone? Mr. Good-for-Nothing over here ruined everything with Todd.

Our branch of the company is as good as lost. Ew, Carrie said, looking at Ryan with disgust. Well, what did you expect, Mother? I mean, look at him.

He’s dressed like a gardener or something. You should have made him stay in the car all night. I wanted to, but your sister wouldn’t allow it.

Now everything is ruined. Martha and Carrie stood on the sidewalk looking defeated. Should I go get the car now? Ryan asked.

Martha rolled her eyes. Yes, get the car. It’s the one thing you’re good at.

By the time Ryan drove them back to their home in Willesley, Mary was already in bed with the lights out. He gathered his things and went to one of the guest rooms. After locking the door and listening to be sure no one was out in the hallway, Ryan took out his phone and called Tom Harlan, his father’s right-hand man in the Quinn family empire.

Hello, Ryan? Tom answered. I’ve been waiting for your call. Are my accounts unfrozen yet? Ryan asked. They are. I can get a bank card delivered to you whenever you like. Until then, just let me know what you need.

I need $20 million invested into CML Financial by tomorrow morning, their branch of the Lowell Corporation. Shouldn’t be a problem, Tom said. And it needs to be anonymous.

I don’t want the money traced back to me or the family. Done. Thanks, Tom. We’ll talk again soon. Ryan hung up and tossed the phone on the bed. Bailing out his wife’s company was nothing.

Keeping them from finding out who their secret investor was would be harder. After two years of keeping secrets, Ryan wasn’t ready to tell them about his family history. At least, not yet.

The next morning, Ryan woke early and began to prepare breakfast for his in-laws. Martha walked into the kitchen wearing her tennis clothes, ready for a day of socializing with the real housewives of Massachusetts. Don’t make the eggs too hard, she said to him.

You’re always making them too hard. Ryan smiled to himself. Whatever you say, Martha. From upstairs, Ryan’s father-in-law yelled, Woohoo! Charles Lowell came bounding down the steps in his pajamas and robe. He was clutching his phone and grinning from ear to ear. What is it? What’s going on? Martha asked.

Charles held out the phone so she could see. You did it! You guys did it! Our company is saved! Martha snatched the phone out of his hand and stared at the screen. Her jaw dropped.

CML Financial’s balance had gone from a $10 million debt to a $10 million profit. I don’t believe it, she said. What is it? Ryan asked innocently.

We got a $20 million cash infusion! We’re not going to lose our company! Congratulations! That’s great news! No thanks to you, Martha said. That scene you made with Todd last night almost cost us everything. Now, now, leave the boy alone, Charles said, trying to keep the peace. This is a wonderful moment. Let’s not ruin it. Martha narrowed her eyes at Ryan, then turned and handed Charles back his phone.

You’re right, dear. The company that you built is still going strong. One thing I don’t understand, though, Charles said, looking at the balance sheet on his screen.

The investment came from an anonymous source. If this was from Todd Baker’s company, why doesn’t it say so? Martha waved him off. Probably some kind of a tax thing.

Who knows? The point is, Todd came through. I’m going upstairs to tell Mary the good news. Martha glared at Ryan one more time as she left to find her daughter.

Later that morning, after Charles and Martha had finished eating, Mary came downstairs. She gave Ryan a kiss on the cheek as he cleaned up the dishes. Hey, honey, Ryan said.

I guess your mom told you the good news. Mary nodded her head. She had an odd look on her face. Ryan couldn’t tell if she was happy or sad. Do you think you could drive me into the city? She asked him. I’d like to work out of her Boston office today.

Martha looked up from her coffee cup. Why would you want to go in today? The crisis is over. We’re saved. Mary ignored her mother and continued to look at Ryan. Sure, honey, he said. Let me go put on my shoes. They didn’t talk on the ride into the city. Mary seemed like she was wrapped up in her own thoughts. Let’s take Boylston, she said, as they entered the Back Bay neighborhood on their way to CML Financial’s offices in Beacon Hill.

Sure thing, Ryan said, making a left on Massachusetts Avenue. Park here. Ryan parked at the curb, then killed the engine.

Mary sat quietly for a moment, then said, I’m sorry for last night, Ryan. I was upset, and I said some things that I didn’t mean, and I appreciate you giving me the space I needed. Ryan shrugged.

No problem. I get it. I’m just happy everything worked out.

She smiled at him, then unbuckled her seatbelt. Come on. He followed her out of the car, and she walked him down the street to an Apple store.

What’s this? Do you need a new phone? He asked. No, you do. You’re using a flip phone, for goodness sake. So? It works just fine for what I need. I want to get you an upgrade, okay? He let her pull him into the store. She flagged down one of the employees, and they got to work transferring the data from his SIM card over to a brand new iPhone.

While the kid was working on the phone, something in the window caught Ryan’s eye. A man was standing outside the store wearing a long coat and an old-fashioned derby hat, pretending not to be looking inside. You know, honey, Ryan said, this is probably going to be a while.

Why don’t you take the car and head over to the office? I’ll take the tea over later and grab the keys from you. Mary looked at the time on her phone. Actually, I think I’ll take you up on that.

I don’t want to get in too late. You sure you’ll be okay? I’m sure, he said. He handed over the keys. She kissed him lightly on the lips. Thank you for being so understanding, she said. He smiled at her and kissed her back, then watched as she left the store, got into the car, and drove off.

The Apple tech finished up and said, Here you are, sir. You’re good to go. Ryan thanked the kid, then walked out of the store.

The man in the long coat and the derby hat was standing by the curb, waiting for him. Hello, Tom, Ryan said. It’s been a long time.

Are you here to bring me home?
