Tom Harlan: (extending his hand) Ryan, it’s good to see you again. Two years is a long time.

Ryan Quinn: (shaking Tom’s hand, nodding) How did you find me?

Tom: Once I knew your number, it was easy to put a trace on the phone. But when I heard you were walking into an Apple store, I figured I’d better catch you before I lost the trace.

Ryan: It’s the same number, Tom. I wasn’t trying to ditch you.

Tom: Of course. Still, you got here awfully fast. Were you following me?

Ryan: Not me exactly.

Tom: (jerking his head to the side) Then who was?

(Two young women appear beside Ryan, seemingly out of nowhere.)

Tom: Ryan, meet Michelle Yang and her sister Constance Yang.

Ryan: (raising an eyebrow) Sent them for what?

Tom: Your father sent them. They’re part of his security team.

Michelle & Constance: (in unison) It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Quinn.

Ryan: (stepping forward, taking Tom by the arm) Excuse me for a moment, ladies. I need a word with Mr. Harlan in private.

(Michelle and Constance nod as Ryan pulls Tom down the block.)

Ryan: Is there a problem, Tom? First of all, just because I’m accepting my father’s money doesn’t mean I’m coming back to run the company. I told you that.

Tom: I understand that, Ryan.

Ryan: Second, I don’t need protecting. I can take care of myself.

Tom: I’m aware of that too.

Ryan: And third, who exactly does my father think I need protecting from? Is there trouble with the mafia?

Tom: (stopping, planting his feet) It’s nothing like that, Ryan. I’ve told you. All of the Quinn businesses are legitimate now. Your father is simply a cautious man. Lots of high-profile executives hire private security.

Ryan: I’m not a high-profile executive.

Tom: Not yet. But your father believes there’s still hope that you’ll take over the business. In fact, he’s decided to open a new headquarters in Beacon Hill.

Ryan: Beacon Hill? You know that’s where my wife’s office is, right?

Tom: Is it? My, what a coincidence!

Ryan: (shaking his head, laughing) No one is pressuring me into anything?

Tom: No pressure at all. If you want to run the headquarters, run it. If you want to buy a yacht and float around the sea for the rest of your life, no one is going to stop you. The family’s resources are yours. Do with them as you like.

Ryan: (studying Tom’s face) Okay then.

(Tom reaches into his pocket and pulls out a gold bank card.)

Tom: No spending limits. Use it as you need.

Ryan: (taking the card, stuffing it into his pocket) Use it as I need, huh? You know, my two-year anniversary is coming up. Any thoughts on where I could buy my wife a nice present?

Tom: Newberry Street is a block over. There are a number of fine jewelry stores there.

Ryan: Nothing too fancy. I don’t want anyone to know about the money, remember?

Tom: So buy her something expensive and tell her it’s a fake. Then, when you’re ready to reveal your secret, you can tell her how much your gift is really worth.

Ryan: (nodding) Not a bad plan, actually.

(Ryan pulls out his new iPhone.)

Ryan: Give me the Yang sisters’ numbers, in case I need to get a hold of them.

(Tom smiles and gives Ryan the contact information.)

Ryan: I’ll be in touch. Oh, and Tom? I don’t want to see those women following me.

Tom: (grinning) Don’t worry. You won’t see them.

(Ryan eyes Tom for a moment, then turns and walks toward Newberry Street.)

[Inside the Jewelry Store]

Sales Associate: Excuse me, sir. Can I help you?

Ryan: Yes, I’m looking for an anniversary gift for my wife.

Sales Associate: (glancing at Ryan’s t-shirt and jeans, frowning) I’m sorry, sir, but I don’t think we’re going to be able to help you. There’s a mall a few blocks away. I’m sure they’ll have something more suitable.

Ryan: No, I think I can find what I need here.

(Another sales associate approaches—young, with a warm smile.)

Matty: Sir, I can help you if you like.

Ryan: (smiling back) I’m looking for something special. Any suggestions?

Matty: Did you have a price range in mind?

Ryan: No range. Just show me the nicest piece you have in the store.

Matty: For that, sir, we would need to step into the vault.

Ryan: Lead the way.

(Inside the vault, Matty presents a 1923 sapphire and diamond bracelet by Cartier.)

Matty: This is a one-of-a-kind piece, sir. Just like your wife.

Ryan: I’ll take it.

Matty: Sir, you should know, the price for this bracelet is—

Ryan: Doesn’t matter. I assume you can wrap it for me?

(As Matty rings up the $7.2 million purchase, the older associate, Susan, storms over.)

Susan: What’s going on here?!

Matty: Susan, this gentleman is buying the 1923 Cartier.

Susan: WHAT?! That bracelet is worth over seven million dollars!

(A couple at the front overhears and gapes. The woman smacks her boyfriend.)

Woman: Bruno, how come you never get me nothing that fancy?!

(Bruno pales and drags her out.)

Susan: (furious) That sale was mine! You stole my commission!

Ryan: If that’s store policy, I’d like to return my purchase.

Susan: What?!

(Barry, the manager, enters.)

Barry: Matty, did Susan speak to this customer first?

Matty: Yes, but—

Barry: Then it’s her sale.

Ryan: Well, then, I have a policy too. I don’t do business with people who judge based on appearance. The commission should be Matty’s. Accept that, or refund my sale.

(Barry hesitates, then caves.)

Barry: Very well. The commission goes to Matty.

Susan: Barry, I’m telling Linda about this! (She storms out.)

Barry: In-laws, am I right?

Ryan: I know exactly how you feel. (Turning to Matty, smiling.) Thank you for your help today. I hope you get to spend some of that commission on something nice for yourself.

(Ryan walks out, staring at the gold bank card.)

Ryan: What else shall we buy today?

Tom Harlan extended his hand to Ryan Quinn. Ryan, it’s good to see you again. Two years is a long time.

Ryan shook Tom’s hand and nodded at him. How did you find me? Once I knew your number, it was easy to put a trace on the phone. But once I heard you were walking into an Apple store, I figured I’d better catch you before I lost the trace.

It’s the same number, Tom. I wasn’t trying to ditch you. Tom nodded.

Of course. Still, you got here awfully fast. Were you following me? Not me exactly.

I just happened to be in the neighborhood. So who was following me? Tom jerked his head and two young women appeared on either side of Ryan, seeming to come out of nowhere. This is Michelle Yang and her sister Constance Yang.

Your father sent them. Sent them for what? Ryan asked. Michelle and Constance are part of your father’s security team.

They are both highly trained agents who can provide all of your security needs. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Quinn. The Yang sister said in unison.

Ryan stepped forward and took Tom by the arm. Excuse me for a moment, ladies. I need to have a word with Mr. Harlan in private.

Michelle and Constance nodded. Ryan walked Tom down the block. Is there a problem, Ryan? First of all, just because I’m accepting my father’s money doesn’t mean I’m coming back to run the company.

I told you that. I understand that, Ryan. But second, I don’t need protecting.

I can take care of myself. I’m aware of that too. And third, who exactly does my father think I need protecting from? Is there trouble with the mafia? Tom planted his feet and they stopped walking.

It’s nothing like that, Ryan. I’ve told you. All of the Quinn businesses are legitimate now.

Your father is simply a cautious man. Lots of high-profile executives hire private security. I’m not a high-profile executive.

Not yet, Tom said. But your father believes there’s still hope that you’ll take over the business. In fact, he’s decided to open a new headquarters in Beacon Hill.

He’s hoping one day you’ll agree to run it. A new headquarters on Beacon Hill? You know that’s where my wife’s office is, right? There was a twinkle in Tom’s eye as he said it. Is it? My, what a coincidence! Ryan shook his head and laughed.

No one is pressuring you into anything, Tom continued. If you want to run the headquarters, run it. If you want to buy a yacht and float around the sea for the rest of your life, no one is going to stop you.

The family’s resources are yours. You can do with them as you like. Ryan peered into Tom’s eyes, trying to see if he was playing some sort of game.

Tom stared back without any trace of emotion. Okay then, Ryan said. Tom reached into his pocket and pulled out a gold bank card.

No spending limits. Use it as you need. Ryan took the gold card and stuffed it in his pocket.

Use it as I need, huh? You know, my two-year anniversary is coming up. Any thoughts on where I could buy my wife a nice present? Tom marched his eyebrow. Newberry Street is a block over.

There are a number of fine jewelry stores over there. Nothing too fancy. I don’t want anyone to know about the money, remember? So buy her something expensive and tell her it’s a fake.

Then, when you’re ready to reveal your secret, you can tell her how much your gift is really worth. Ryan nodded his head. Not a bad plan, actually.

He pulled out his new iPhone. Give me the Yang sisters’ numbers, in case I need to get a hold of them. Tom smiled and gave Ryan the contact information.

I’ll be in touch, Ryan said. He started walking toward Newberry Street. After a few steps, he turned and said, Oh, and Tom? I don’t want to see those women following me.

Don’t worry, Tom said with a smile. You won’t see them. Ryan narrowed his eyes at Tom for a beat, then turned and kept walking.

He headed over to Newberry Street and walked into a high-end jewelry store. A security guard standing by the front door eyed him suspiciously. Ryan nodded at him and walked past.

A sales associate walked over to him and looked him up and down. Excuse me, sir. Can I help you? She asked.

Yes, I’m looking for an anniversary gift for my wife. The woman looked him over again, frowning at his t-shirt and jeans. I’m sorry, sir, but I don’t think we’re going to be able to help you.

But there’s a mall just a few blocks away. I’m sure they’ll have something more suitable for you. No, I think I can find what I need here.

The woman was about to say something else when a couple walked into the store. The man looked to be in his early 50s. He was wearing a shiny blue suit and a Rolex watch.

The tiny blonde woman clinging to his arm was about 30 years younger than him. Would you excuse me? The woman said to Ryan, then walked over to the couple. She gestured something to the security guard, who stood up straighter and glared at Ryan.

Ryan shook his head and continued to look around the store. Another sales associate came over to him. She was much younger than her co-worker, and she had a warm smile on her face.

Sir, I can help you if you like. Ryan smiled back and explained what he was looking for. Did you have a price range in mind? She asked.

No range. Just show me the nicest piece you have in the store. For that, sir, we would need to step into the vault.

Lead the way, Ryan said. The young woman asked the security guard to open up the vault. The guard looked at Ryan doubtfully, but did as he was told.

From the front of the store, the older saleswoman saw what was happening and shook her head. Waste of time, she thought to herself. The guard opened the vault, and the three of them stepped inside.

The room was all white, with a handful of cases made from three-inch-thick bulletproof glass. What kind of jewelry does your wife like, sir? Well, I know she likes bracelets, and her birthstone is sapphire, if that helps. The sales associate smiled.

I have just the thing. She led Ryan over to one of the cases. This is a 1923 sapphire and diamond bracelet by Cartier, recently acquired at auction.

It’s mounted in platinum and weighs just over ten and a half carats. Ryan bent down and peered at the bracelet through the case. It’s beautiful.

One of a kind, actually. Just like my wife. Ryan straightened up, took the gold bank card out of his pocket, and held it out to her.

I’ll take it. The young woman hesitated. Sir, you should know, the price for this bracelet is- Doesn’t matter, he said, cutting her off.

I want it. I assume you can wrap it for me? The sales associate’s hands trembled as she took the card. Yes, sir.

Of course, sir. Just let me run your card and I’ll get it wrapped up right away. She stepped out of the vault and walked to the register.

Ryan followed her. The security guard followed closely behind. The older sales associate saw her co-worker ringing up the sale and hurried over to the register.

What’s going on here? She demanded. Susan, the younger associate said. You’re not going to believe this.

This gentleman is buying the 1923 Cartier. Susan, the older associate, stared at her co-worker in disbelief. What? That bracelet is worth over seven million dollars.

The couple at the front of the store swung their heads around. The woman smacked her boyfriend on the arm and said, Bruno, how come you never get me nothing that fancy? Bruno’s face turned pale. He grabbed his girlfriend by the arm and hustled her out the door.

Come on, baby. Let’s go get something to eat. The young associate finished ringing up the sale.

The 7.2 million dollar purchase was approved. No fair, Susan screamed. I spoke to him first.

You’re trying to steal my commission. The young woman stammered. Susan, I, I. And you cost me another sale with that couple who just left, Susan continued.

Oh, I don’t think you’d have gotten much out of those two, Brian said. Did you see that guy’s wrist? I saw the Rolex on his wrist, Susan said. Yeah, but did you see how his wrist had turned green underneath the watch? That wasn’t a Rolex.

It was a fake. He was trying to play the big shot in front of his girl. Susan huffed a few times and pulled out her phone.

I’m going to call Barry, she whined. Brian leaned closer to the young associate and whispered. Who’s Barry? The manager, she answered nervously.

Ah, gotcha. Yes, please call Barry, he said to Susan. I look forward to straightening this all out.

Ten minutes later, Barry, a balding middle-aged man, came shuffling into the store. His shirt was untucked and what was left of his hair was a mess. Okay, just what the heck’s going on around here? Barry asked.

Susan pointed at the young associate. Matty stole that customer from me. I talked to him first, then she rang up his sale.

That’s not true, Mr. Winter, Matty said. Susan was… Hold on, Barry interrupted. Matty, did Susan speak to this customer first? Yes, Mr. Winter, but… No buts.

Store policy is whichever salesperson speaks to the customer first. That’s their sale. No exceptions.

Susan crossed her arms and smiled in triumph. Matty lowered her head. She was fighting back tears.

Brian stretched and yawned. Well, then, if that’s the way it’s gonna be, I’m afraid I’ll need to return my purchase. What? Susan yelled.

Barry held up his hands. Now, now, Susan, if this customer wants his sale refunded, that’s his right. What was the item he purchased? The 1923 Cartier Sapphire and Diamond Bracelet, sir, Matty said softly.

Barry’s face turned white. The 1923, uh… Sir? Any chance I could get you to reconsider returning this item? Sure, Brian said. You can give the commission to Matty here.

She’s the one who helped me. Barry, do something, Susan said. Sweat began to form on Barry’s forehead.

Calm down, Susan. Let me handle this, he turned to Brian. Sir, here at Abbott & Sons Jewelers, we have a… Yes, yes, a store policy, Brian said, sounding bored.

Well, I have a policy, too. I don’t do business with people who look down on others because of how they’re dressed. Susan had a chance to help me but decided I wasn’t worth her time.

Matty stepped in and helped me find what I was looking for. The commission should be hers. Accept that or refund my sale.

Barry hesitated for a moment. Susan stomped her feet. Barry, you can’t do this to me.

I’m your sister-in-law. Shut up, Barry yelled. He turned back to Ryan.

Very well, sir. I believe we can make an exception to store policy this one time. Susan grabbed Barry by the collar and said into his ear.

I’m telling Linda about this. Enjoy sleeping on the couch tonight, Barry. She let go of him and stormed out of the store.

Barry smiled sheepishly at Ryan. In-laws, am I right? I know exactly how you feel, Ryan said. He turned to Matty and smiled at her.

Thank you for your help today, Matty. I hope you get to spend some of that commission on something nice for yourself. Matty lowered her head and blushed.

Ryan walked out of the store with his $7 million bracelet. He took out the gold bank card and stared at it. What else shall we buy today?
